What led to its creation?
Brent Simpson (Pi Upsilon Lambda Alumni Chapter in Prince George’s County) and Anwar Taylor (Iota Zeta College Chapter at the University of Maryland College Park) are brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated initiated in the Spring of 2009.
During the process of becoming Brothers, Brent and Anwar began developing a bond which would continue to grow beyond the Spring of 2009. Throughout the Spring Anwar mentioned his need for summer employment and Brent knew the office he was working in needed additional help. So, later in the year during a district meeting, Brent offered Anwar a paid summer internship out of the spirit of brotherhood. This filled a service need for the company while also adding another professional work experience to Anwar’s resume making him more attractive to employers after graduation.
Brent and Anwar forged a bond of trust and brotherhood. Over the years, their bond has grown stronger into a “Big Brother/Little Brother” dynamic that continues to this day. Through everything, Brent and Anwar have continued to stay in contact, support one another, share life experiences, hang out, extend their networks, introduce each other to Brothers they would not have otherwise met, discuss business opportunities and share their love for the fraternity. Anwar went on the graduate and began to focus on building his career while Brent’s family and business continued to grow. Needless to say, A.B.N. was pushed to the back burner.
A few years later while conducting a school project at University of Maryland, Kawan Glover (IZSpr13), reached out to Anwar to interview him. At the conclusion of the interview, Kawan asked if there were anyone else Anwar thought he should interview and Anwar gave Kawan Brent Simpson’s name and number. You can hear the rest in the video below:
The purpose of the above story is to give you the background of Alpha Business Nation.
A.B.N. did not stem from an economic need or any type of selfish desire to grow one’s business on the idea to pick resources from the fraternity just to leave it without. This is not the case at all! It grew from two Brothers with different backgrounds coming together to form a deeper connection that would later increase both of their business acumen and increase the leadership IQs to enrich the ranks within the fraternity.
